A delightful dwarf rhododendron with bright scarlet-red funnel-shaped flowers borne in loose trusses of 4-5 blooms during mid-spring. The plant develops a low, compact, spreading habit with glossy dark green evergreen foliage, making it ideal for smaller garden spaces and container growing. The cultivar matures to 25-50cm in height and spread over 10 years.Rhododendron ‘Bengal’ requires partial or dappled shade and acidic, well-drained soil enriched with ericaceous compost. The plant is hardy to -20°C and enjoys consistent moisture, particularly during the critical flower-bud-initiation period in late June. Keep the plant away from strong winds and heat-stress sites. This cultivar is low-maintenance and rated easy to grow, making it a fine choice for gardeners new to rhododendrons. Bred by D. Hobbie in Germany, it combines the resilience of ‘Essex Scarlet’ with the compact habit of Rhododendron forrestii Repens Group. Note: all parts are harmful if ingested; wear gloves when handling and keep away from pets and children.
