Penstemon ‘Blackbird’ is an outstanding herbaceous perennial renowned for its striking deep wine-purple tubular flowers with contrasting white throats. The flowers are borne on upright stems above narrowly lance-shaped green foliage with reddish tones, creating an elegant and sophisticated display from summer through to the first frosts.A valuable nectar source for bees, butterflies and other pollinators, ‘Blackbird’ reaches 80-100cm in height with a spread of 40-50cm, making it ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens and wildlife areas. Once established, it is low-maintenance and drought-tolerant.Grow in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. In cold areas, apply a dry winter mulch for protection. Deadhead spent flowers regularly throughout the season to encourage continued blooming, and cut back to the base in late winter as new growth appears.
