Penstemon 'Andenken an Friedrich Hahn' (Pot Size 1L) Garnet Beardtongue sold by Boma Garden Centre
Penstemon ‘Garnet’ is a highly rewarding border perennial prized for its vibrant deep wine-red flowers. This bushy semi-evergreen plant produces erect spikes of tubular bell-shaped blooms, each flower beautifully marked with white in the throat. Flowering prolifically from July through to the first autumn frosts, it is an absolute magnet for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The narrow, dark green foliage provides an elegant contrast to the rich flower colour.Growing to around 90cm tall, it becomes a substantial, long-lived border presence-one of the longest-lived penstemon varieties, often thriving for many years. Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil; it tolerates chalk, loam and sandy soils with ease. Once established, it shows good drought tolerance and is surprisingly hardy, reliably returning year after year throughout the UK. The plant requires minimal fuss: deadhead spent flowers to encourage further blooms, and cut back to the base in early spring. In colder regions, apply a protective dry mulch over winter.
