Mahonia eurybracteata subsp. ganpinensis 'Meteor' (Pot Size 3L) sold by Boma Garden Centre
Mahonia ‘Meteor’ is a distinctive evergreen shrub, prized for its spineless foliage which is pleasantly soft to handle — rare among mahonias. New growth emerges a striking bright red in spring and summer, gradually deepening to a rich dark green. From late August through November, the plant produces abundant spires of honey-scented yellow flowers, providing valuable nectar for pollinators during the autumn months when few other plants are in bloom. The flowers are followed by ornamental blue-black berries that attract birds into the garden.Growing to around 1.2–1.5 metres in height and spread over 5–10 years, this compact shrub suits architectural planting, city gardens and alongside seating or pathways — the soft leaves make it ideal for these positions. Plant in full sun to partial shade and provide moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates chalk, clay and sandy soils. Fully hardy to -15°C, it requires minimal maintenance and is generally pest and disease-free.A relatively new cultivar from breeder Alan Postill and introduced by Hillier Nurseries, ‘Meteor’ offers year-round interest with foliage colour, late autumn flowers and wildlife appeal.
