The Climbing Hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris) is one of the most versatile and rewarding climbers for the British garden. Unlike most climbers, it is truly self-clinging — attaching itself to walls, fences, and structures via aerial rootlets, with no need for wires or trellis once established.In summer, the plant produces broad, flat lacecap flowerheads up to 20 cm across — pure white sterile florets surrounding a central cluster of small fertile flowers. The effect against a dark wall or fence is striking. In autumn, the large mid-green leaves turn a warm golden yellow before dropping. In winter, reddish-brown peeling bark and the strong architectural framework provide lasting structure and character.Climbing Hydrangea is one of very few vigorous climbers that thrives in shade, making it an outstanding choice for north- and east-facing walls where little else performs. It will also grow in full sun provided the soil remains reliably moist. Fully hardy across virtually all of the UK (H5) and awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit.Supplied frame-trained, these plants give immediate structure and are ready to position against walls, fences, pergolas, or garden buildings.
