Hydrangea ‘Crûg Coral’ (full botanical name: Hydrangea anomala subsp. glabra ‘Crûg Coral’) is a deciduous, self-clinging climbing hydrangea introduced by Crug Farm, the renowned Welsh collector nursery. The plant was collected in 1996 from an isolated colony in the Central Mountains of Taiwan (collection number BSWJ3117), making it a genuinely rare subspecies seldom seen in cultivation outside specialist collections.In early summer, flattened flowerheads up to 15 cm wide open in a warm dusky coral-red, gradually softening to coral-pink and creamy-white as the season progresses. The effect is subtle and unusual — quite different from the typical white climbing hydrangeas in the trade. The mid-green leaves turn golden before falling in autumn. It climbs by aerial roots, becoming self-supporting once established.Best grown against a wall or fence in partial shade or sheltered sun, in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil of acid to neutral pH. Like all climbing hydrangeas it is slow to establish — patience in the first two seasons is rewarded with increasingly vigorous growth. Rated H5, it is hardy throughout most of the UK.
