Dionaea muscipula, aka ‘The Venus flytrap’, is probably the most iconic plant of all time- the source of inspiration for the dreaded ‘Man-eating plant’ and the most commonly known cold-blooded killer among carnivorous houseplants. Venus flytraps are relatively straightforward, easy-care plants. Just ensure you don’t trigger their traps, as this uses up a lot of energy. Keep them in a bright spot with constantly moist soil, and they’ll thrive. Ideally, you would use rainwater as chlorinated alkaline tap water can alter pH levels in the soil too much. Carnivorous plants across the board require a very low nutrient, sandy mix, as this replicates their boggy natural habitat. Dionaea has a dormancy period over winter where the traps will die back- don’t panic, they’ll be back in the spring to catch more flies!
