Purple, magenta and fresh green, in a six-plant mix that works straight from the tray. The ornamental kale is the centrepiece, with ruffled leaves in deep lilac-purple edged with cream-green. Beside it, a cyclamen carries magenta flowers above silver-marbled leaves, and two violas add small, velvety purple faces with a yellow eye. A clump of thyme brings fine, bright foliage, and a tuft of thread-like grass lifts the edge of the planting.Colour in kale deepens as temperatures fall, so the mix improves as autumn goes on. Violas keep flowering for months, even through mild spells in winter. Plant in a window box, a pot by the front door or a courtyard container, where you can see it from indoors.For a fuller display, add trailing ivy over the rim, a few purple heucheras for foliage, or a skimmia for winter buds. Bulbs such as dwarf irises or purple crocus can go underneath now for early colour in spring.Six plants is about right for a 60cm window box.
