Bring colour and intricate texture to sunny spaces with Sempervivum, commonly known as houseleek. Its fleshy, pointed leaves form compact geometric rosettes, with colours ranging from green and blue-grey to burgundy and purple, depending on the variety and season.Supplied in a 14cm diameter pot, this evergreen succulent is ideal for shallow containers, alpine troughs, gravel gardens and well-drained rockeries. Combine it with low-growing sedums, other houseleeks and compact alpine plants to create contrasting textures amongst stones and gravel.Small offsets develop around established rosettes, gradually forming an attractive colony. Mature rosettes may also produce star-shaped summer flowers, although the foliage provides the lasting appeal. Each flowering rosette dies afterwards, leaving its surrounding offsets to continue the display. RHS plant guide
