Leucothoe walteri ‘Firestar’ is a striking evergreen shrub prized for its dramatic foliage display. The glossy, oval leaves emerge flushed red with cream edges, maturing to gold-and-green variegation through summer. As autumn arrives and temperatures drop, the foliage transforms to rich burgundy and red tones, providing outstanding winter interest.Small white flowers appear in spring, but it is the foliage that truly captivates throughout the year. Hardy to H6, this slow-growing shrub reaches 1-1.5 metres in height with a spread of 1.5-2.5 metres, making it ideal for shrub borders, containers and shaded woodland settings.Plant in reliably moist, well-drained acid soil, ideally enriched with ericaceous compost if your garden is not naturally acidic. It thrives in partial shade but will tolerate full shade if necessary. Once established, it requires minimal pruning: simply remove any dead or damaged wood in early spring.
