Native to western China, this large upright deciduous shrub is prized above all for its remarkable foliage — the broad, ovate leaves are softly velvety to the touch, giving the plant a lush, almost tropical feel throughout the growing season.In late summer, large flat flowerheads up to 20 cm across appear above the foliage. Each head is a true lacecap: a ring of white sterile ray florets surrounds a central cluster of mauve-purple fertile flowers. The effect is soft and naturalistic — far removed from the bold mophead — and ages beautifully as summer turns to autumn.Give this hydrangea a position in partial shade or dappled sun in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil.
