Acer palmatum ‘Redwine’ is a striking Japanese maple with distinctive foliage that captivates year-round. New growth emerges pinkish-red before darkening to deep red in spring, turning green with red tips in summer, and finishing with warm orange-red tones in autumn. This slow-growing, compact deciduous shrub reaches 1.5-2.5 metres in height with a spread of 0.5-1 metre, making it perfect for smaller gardens, beds, borders, and container planting. It thrives in moist but well-drained soil with a preference for acid conditions. Plant in partial shade for the best foliage colour, though full sun is tolerated. Hardy to H4, it is relatively hardy throughout most of the UK. Minimal pruning is needed-simply remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Water regularly during summer, particularly during dry spells, to maintain beautiful leaf colour and prevent leaf scorch.
